TESTIMONIO
Desde mi juventud, mi vida musical ha
estado relacionada con el Maestro Harold
Gramatges.
Poco a poco fui conociendo su creación
artística y sus valores humanos. Hombre
estreno mundial.
Otras primeras audiciones mundiales
1997. Con gran satisfacción he tocado
PRESENTACION
carácter cantábile, despliega un proceso modulatorio sin abandonar la tonalidad prevalente en la obra;
Pequeña suite A (1943)
scarlattina.
Móvil I. (1969)
homenaje a Ignacio Cervantes. (Tres danzas para piano). (1947)

TESTIMONY
Since my youth, my musical life has been
related with Proffesor Harold Gramatges. I
got acquainted with his artistic creations and
his great human valué little by little. Being a
man capable of helping any one in need, he
has been the light and the guide for several
generations of Cuban musicians, and I have
had the luck and the pleasure to be among
them.
I remember how devotely and painstakingly
we worked together the program we were
going to play at the INTERPODIUM
Festival in Bratislav, in October 1977, with
music from the Baroque period up to the
20th century, including his Móvil III, which
was written especially by Gramatges for that
ocasión, performing then, together with
flautist Alberto Corrales, its world’s debut.
Other Gramatges’ first world auditions I have
executed are: Contrasts Etude, at the Fine
Arts Museum in August 1976, and Six
Ancient Dances, at UNEAC’s Sala Martínez
Villena in May 1997. With great satisfaction
I have played several of the Proffesor’s work
during my intemational tours, having
Incidences always attracted the interest of
attendants, pianists and critics.
The repertoire here presented is full of
beautiful contrasts which were produced
during the fifty two years spanning from the
first to the last created. Each one of them
posseses a distinctive seal of its author:
sensitivity, intelligence, lyrism, reflection,
mystery, phylosophy, a solid counterpoint
technic and very personal harmonio
treatment.
My greatest desire is that this álbum, which
contains the integral works for piano solo by
Proffesor Harold Gramatges, reaches every
one of you in all its magnificence through my
performance, which I have prepared with
love and devotion.
Thanks, Proffesor, for this pianistic
literature’s beautiful gift.
Roberto Urbay.
PRESENTATION
Roberto Urbay is a fulfilled musician. His vast culture has opened up for him all the roads through the
history of sounds, with a broad outlook on epochs, styles and concepts. With great talent and a purified
style, he has preferred to cope with the music of the 20th Century, particularly with contemporary
Cuban Music. His personal link with my musical work has made him an indisputable interpreter of my
piano and chamber music. That is the reason why I selected him to make this recording. Let me express
here my acknowledgement of the high degree of fidelity he accomplished in his whole performance.
This CD was recorded thanks to the kindness of Silvio rodríguez, who allowed us to use the equipment
of his studio Ojalá free of charge. I thank this dear friend for his generosity.
Harold Gramatges.
PROLOG
Harold Gramatges’ compositions for piano occupies an important place in the list of his musical works.
Starting with his Sonata in E Sharp, written in 1942, his music shows features that will characterize his
composing throughout his musical career. An absolutely neat, solid, musical discourse, without
technical or stylistic hesitations has presided over each of his works for piano, which have progressed
parallel to and in correspondence with his other works for different formats written around the same
dates. Thus, his music for piano explains, in its long history, the determining features of this
composer’s Creative processes.
ABOUT THE OPUSES
Sonata in E Sharp (1942) (Conceived for harpsichord). It comprises three movements: the first one,
Allegro moderato, has a percussive character, with an intermediate section, Lento ma non troppo,
which goes back to Allegro; the second one, Theme with variations, of a cantabile character, displays a
modulative process without abandoning the prevailing tonality of the work; the third one, Allegro
giubiloso glides along avidly like a jig. This opus won in Cuba the competition convoked by the U.S.
Department of Latin American Cultural Affairs, which allowed Gramatges to obtain a fellowship in
Tanglewood, Mass., where he studied Composition with Aaron Copland and Orchestra Direction with
Serge Koussevitzky.
Petite Suite (1943). Follows the baroque model: Prelude-Allemande-Siciliana-Saraband-Minuet. His
versión for guitar, performed by maestro Jesús Ortega, is currently very well known.
Two Cuban Dance Tunes: Montunas y Soñeras (1949). Written in New York, were created in
remembrance of the “sones orientales”, heard by the composer in his native city of Santiago de Cuba
during his childhood. These dance tunes are structured following brief sequences, where different
syncopated, salient motifs plastically evoke the folk bands which traditionally played this type of
music. They were orchestrated by the composer and debuted with him as the conductor.
Prelude for the Album (1950). It is conceived as an opening piece which can be folio wed or preceded by
another work of the composer himself. (It has been played with the Guajira before and after it). It is
made up of a rhythmic obstinato derived from the “son”. He wrote it at the request of ElkanVogel, Inc.
(Phil., USA) for the álbum Six Modern Cuban Composers (with works by Argeliers León, Hilario
González, Edgardo Martín, Nilo Rodríguez and José Ardévol).
Three Preludes as a Toccata (1952-53). They are conceived as a toccata with three movements to be
played consecutively. The first one, Allegro, slides horizontally on syncopated motifs which
constitute its structural basis. The second one, Andante e Molto Espressivo, evokes the Cuban folk
spirit through a deep lyricism that flows like improvised music. The third one, Allegro , expands in
contrasting dynamic frolic, based on rhythmic formulas derived basically from Cuban Country
Music. A central section (Andante), of a cantabile character, acts as a truce before beginning the
incisive tone which characterizes the last prelude.
A Cuban Suite for Children (1956). It was composed with a didactic aim, linking four traditional
genres of Cuban folk music: Danzón, Guajira, Habanera and Son, made very freely and simple for
five‘ fingers and both hands, written on the treble clef. Maestro Jesús Ortega has made a versión of this
work for two guitars.
Guajira (1956). Part of the prelude for the theater farce Amor de Don Perlimplín con Belisa en su
Jardín, by Federico García Lorca, where is included the melodic design of the Canción de Belisa,
which forms part of this incidental music. The musical orbit defines the baroque scenic ambiance of
the work, greatly reminiscing Scarlett.
Móvil 7(1969). Represents a change of procedures in the composer’s Creative progress: new interests
lead him to new structural tasks, always very aptly solved. This work is based on changing sound
elements which “serially” take place in an expressive atmosphere of many timbre shifts from the
chromatic motif; which begins the work. The time structure is organized according to different sound
planes activated by the different ways of playing the instrument. The allusion to the Cuban spirit
converges by way of the technical resources used in the work. For its executions -keyboard and chord
instruments- two percussion sticks are used.
Study of Contrasts (1974). It was made for a female artistic choreography, which Cuba took to an
intemational contest. This versión has an enriched rhythmic pulse and an anlarged central part,
Andante molto espressivo.
Incidences (1977). Follows concepts that appear in Móvil I and other random works of the composer
(Móvil II for an instrumental ensemble, Móvil III for flute and piano. Móvil IV for guitar, “Designs”
for wind quintet with percussion, “Corriemu” for violin, cello and piano, “Dialogue” for violin and
piano, “Synthesis” for flute, viola, guitar and percussion, among others). A free set of open “series”
and timbre resources of the piano (through the use of a small chain) incidentally bring about four
citations of significant works in Cuban piano history: the dance tune Invitación by Ignacio Cervantes,
La comparsa by Ernesto Lecuona, the Berceuse Campesina by Alejandro García Caturla and the dance
tune Montuna by the composer himself, as a self-portrait. The work thus becomes a homage to the piano
by renowned Cuban composers.
Six AncientDance Tunes (1989). In them, the composer has paid homage, through different flowers of
the cuban garden, to six ladies very cióse to him, among whom is his wife. Two outstanding 19th
Century composers, Manuel Saumell (Quadrilles) and Ignacio Cervantes (Dances), make their presence
felt in this music, in an apt symbiosis with the personal style of maestro Gramatges.
Thinking ofYou (1937). It is a “song without words” dedicated by the composer to his then sweetheart,
now wife. It follows a Schumannian romantic orbit.
Homage to Ignacio Cervantes (Three Dances for Piano ) (1947). On the centennial of the birth of this
illustrius Cuban composer, the dances are conceived according to Cervantes’s model: two sections of 16
bars each, keeping the melodic, rhytmic and modulatory process which defines the Cuban music
idiosyncrasy characterizing Cervantes’ work.
